Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 has today opened applications for 2000 volunteer roles, delivered in partnership with United By 2022, the charity created to continue the legacy of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
As part of its commitment to creating meaningful social impact, Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 will provide volunteer opportunities across all areas of the event, with at least 25% of roles allocated to residents of Birmingham and the West Midlands and a further 25% reserved for members of the Armed Forces Community.
Volunteers will play a vital role in creating positive experiences for competitors, their families and friends, and everyone attending the Games. Opportunities span a wide range of roles and experience levels - sport operations, ceremonies, accessibility services, participating nations, media operations and venue delivery - ensuring there is something for everyone, whether they are experienced volunteers or taking part for the first time.
Helen Helliwell, CEO at Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, said:
"Volunteers are the spirit of every Invictus Games. They create the moments that competitors, families, friends and spectators remember long after the Games have ended.
Applications are welcome from anyone over 18, so whether you've volunteered at major events before or are looking for your very first volunteering opportunity, we'd love you to join us. As a volunteer, you’re not just supporting an event, you'll play a part in someone’s recovery journey, and help shape an inclusive, community-driven Games where every interaction matters."
Building on the volunteering legacy of Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, the partnership with United By 2022 will help harness community spirit, creating meaningful opportunities for local people. Through its Volunteer Collective, United By 2022 has developed a place-based workforce of more than 2,500 volunteers supporting major supporting events and community festivals across the West Midlands.
Nicola Turner MBE, CEO at United By 2022, said:
"United By 2022 was created to continue the legacy of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and keep that sense of pride, connection and community spirit alive across the West Midlands.
Our Volunteer Collective ensures visitors coming to Birmingham and the wider West Midlands are met with local knowledge, bags of pride for our place, and of course, that warm Brummie welcome! We're delighted to be working with Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 to create opportunities for people to be part of an extraordinary event while delivering a lasting volunteering legacy for the West Midlands."
The Invictus Games use the power of sport to support the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans. Taking place from 10-17 July 2027, Birmingham 2027 will welcome up to 550 competitors from up to 25 nations alongside their families, friends and supporters.
Volunteers will be instrumental in creating the welcoming and inclusive environment that sits at the heart of the experience, helping competitors and their loved ones connect, celebrate achievement and share memorable moments throughout the Games.
